We usually feel sad about little things that we do not possess, but if we look around, there are many people who need happiness more than we do. A gift can be in any form, and it is most valued when it is most needed. There’s joy in giving a hug to somebody who feels alone, in giving a smile to someone who’s unhappy, in giving food to a hungry person, and in giving warm clothes to a poor child shivering in cold. Just give a try, and you will realize the worth of your little effort.
The joy of giving also enhances feelings of self-worth. When we do something for others, we discover our intrinsic nature, hidden abilities and talents. It helps us to realize the meaning of life and takes away its emptiness, and we embark on a journey to self-actualization. It makes us realize that we, too, can make a difference. Gradually, we leave behind our fears and start feeling more secure.
When we give, we must not expect in return. Instead, we should realize that whatever we give is a gift from someone else to us. If you think over how you have become who you are today, you will realize the importance of gifts you have got from others- your family, teachers and friends.
